Almond Granola

2 cups old-fashioned oats
1/2 cup wheat germ
3/4 cup slivered almonds
2 T light brown sugar
1/4 t salt
1/4 cup maple syrup
3 T canola oil
1 T water

preheat oven to 275 degrees.
prepare baking sheet with cooking spray, set aside.
in a large bowl, mix oats, wheat germ, sugar, salt, and almonds.
bring syrup, oil, and water to a simmer in a saucepan over low heat.
drizzle over oat mixture and combine.
pour mixture into prepared pan.
bake for 30 minutes, stir, and bake for another 15 minutes, until golden brown.
let cool and store in an airtight container, for up to 2 weeks.

printed in the Feb. 24-26, 2006 issue of USA Weekend.
