I slayed the dragonfruit…(oh, that was too easy and you know it!)
April 20, 2008 at 8:51 am | In food |I finally found the way to enjoy Trader Joe’s dragonfruit the way it should be: it’s said on the package that it tastes lovely when dipped in yogurt, which I did here. I put the fruit in hours prior to enjoying, and what a pleasant surprise to find that a. the dragonfruit color had seeped and made beautiful twirls in the soy yogurt and b. the part that was in the yogurt itself actually softened, got rehydrated and plumped up again! a feast for the buds.
verdict: at first I wasn’t sure of these babies, now that I know how to enjoy them best, I will definitely get more.

just a “little” treat for Chaz’s dessert tonight: homemade vanilla soy ice cream [V-con] deliciously nestled in the center of [I sound like a sales assistant, crap] cherry rum spice cookies.
if he were my boss, I’d ask for a raise.
also, keep your eyes peeled for Prokite Propaganda on Etsy. the girl’s got mad skills.

Eee, so cute! After months of not having a desktop, I now have adorable bunnies with cupcakes to greet me when I turn the computer on.
I love that dragon fruit picture, the colours are so vivid and pretty!

I’ve never had dragonfruit before, it looks beautiful!
(As does that delicious cookie… yum yum!)

That might have been an easy joke to make, but it was CLEVER - I wouldn’t have thought of that!! Love it!!
Chaz is quite lucky - that ice ‘cream’ sandwich looks AMAZING!!

I’ve never eaten dragonfruits but they really look delicious…and at this time of the day I’d love some!!
You are really creative!!
I’m loving reading your blog.
Thanks

I have the one with the ice cream, Ash! same here, we usually just go for the plain gray background, but couldn’t resist frippy’s amazing bunny art.
I’ve never had fresh dragonfruit either, Romina! I really should try to branch out a bit more when it comes to fruit and veggies. wish I had access to a good farmers market or CSA.
Liz, please tell Chaz he’s lucky? nah I kid, he doesn’t take it all for granted. or does he?
thank you Silvia!! there seems to be a typo in the link back to your site, I always want to check it out but it leads nowhere (I think there’s an extra p in blogspot or something of the sort), and then I forget to correct it and go there! I’m going right now since I think of it. :)

thanks for the comment! you have no idea how excited i was to get a comment from one of the revered vegan bloggers!! haha..my immediate thought was, “oh my god, that creative culinary genius actually bothered to post about my lame bowl of cereal..” haha anyways, your blog is great, i’ve already spent like 2 hrs in my dorm room looking through your archive of recipes, looking forward to next month when i get home from school (where i have a kitchen lol) for the summer and can make everything i’ve seen here! i’m brand new to veganism, but i sure as hell have always loved cooking, so i’m looking forward to starting this adventure :)

I love your addition of alcohol to so many baked goods. It just makes them that more unique and exotic. You need to create a cookbook: “Tipsy & Exotic Baking”. I just bought a whole bag of dried cherries from the farmers market, they are about 10 times better than the ones you can get at Trader Joe’s. Unfortunately, they’re actually a birthday present for my mother so I shouldn’t really use them.

Oooh, I don’t think I’ve ever seen dried dragonfruit in the shops here - it looks really pretty!
Your cookie recipes sounds great - I’ve been over to it and bookmarked it for later

Sophie: I hope you’ll like the cookies if you make ‘em! have you tried exotic food markets for the dragonfruit?
Nick: oooh, what a nifty b-day present for your mom. want me to slap your hands off of the dried cherries so that you don’t use them? it’s for your own good, really. I’m no sadist, I promise.
Nora: revered vegan blogger? where? can’t wait to see the goodies you’re going to whip up when you’re finally free!

I tried one of those beasts a couple of weeks ago - they looked very exciting! Kinda tasted like kiwi I thought! Mine was a fresh one though
Yum!

I am going to be near a Trader Joe’s later this week, so thanks for the recommendation! I will have to add dragon fruit to my ever expanding list of things to pick up…
That ice cream sandwich looks divine!

How exciting to see someone else use dragonfruit - I bought some at a market for the first time a few weeks back and loved it - I used it in muesli and it was great - i meant to use it in other dried fruit type recipes but it seemed too precious and finally last night I got sick of it waiting for an amazing recipe and so I just ate it plain but will look out for it again (not sure if sold anywhere here in melbourne yet as I bought some that was made in Darwin)

I have never tried dried drangon fruit before, need to check them out when I am at TJ next. If you come across any fresh drangon fruits in CA, get them. They are lovely too. :)

cherries! I love cherries, sadly, I’ve never thought of putting them in a cookie before - thanks for the idea :). Also, I’d really like to make those pumpkin rolls next weekend. I have so much canned pumpkin, for some reason i kept saving it and buying more, unaware of the fact that I was actually doing this :). One thing, though, I have a hard time digesting margarine, is there a dairy free substitute I can use in its place?
BTW, I’m always so amazed when I visit your blog; each time I make it back here, there are always so many yummy things I want to make. Oh, guess what? The reason why I’m making the pumpkin recipes next weekend is that I’ll be using one of your cupcake recipes this weekend! I’ve had to bake so many cookies for work lately, and they all have so much butter in em…as a result, I’ve had way too many tummy aches to count (due to not having a gallbladder, I have a hard time digesting fatty foods, especially dairy). I have found that vegan desserts are a lot easier to eat…and they’re yummy, especially the cupcakes :). I’ll let you know how it turns out!
(jeez, I always leave such long posts :P, hope you don’t mind :D)

You’ve now inspired me to try dragon fruit…I too have seen it in Trader Joe’s, but have been shying away from it because I never see it being used. Thanks for the great post and blog!

my pleasure, My Sweet & Saucy! I hope you’ll enjoy it when you give it a try.
Sophie: it’s a pleasure to read from you, so never worry about the length of your comments. yes, please let me know if the cuppers are to your liking. I hope your tummy feels better soon, too. what a pain to be in pain and not get what you want to eat!
Mandy: we have a deal, I’ll give a try to fresh dragonfruit if I find it here.
Johanna: ooh, I like your idea of throwing it in a muesli!
Courtney: be sure to try the tamarind at TJ, it’s even better!
Russ: yeah I totally agree that it has a little something of the kiwi too.

I picked up some of that dragonfruit and it was pretty good…weird, but good. I’ll be back in Boston in June so I’ll pick up some more and try the yogurt thing. They didn’t have the tamarind at the Arlington store, though…I’ll have to go to one of the larger ones next time.
Comment by Rachael — April 22, 2008 #
I hope you can find the tamarind, Rachael. maybe they could order it in for you?
