An addendum to the adapted Black Bean Brownies

May 29, 2008 at 7:49 am | In blahblah |

while most people who have tried the recipe love it, a handful complains about too strong a banana flavor: here’s a suggestion, after seeing Rachel’s version, to use pumpkin purée for at least one (or both) of the bananas and cut down on the flavor. you could always sub applesauce instead like I did in the blondies, of course.

personally, after screaming my love for all things banana & black bean yesterday, I must reiterate I find them gobble-icious the way they are even though I’m usually not fond of banana-flavored foods. proof that it’s all a matter of personal taste. now go show them beans who’s boss!

  2. I love the fact that these brownies never seem to disappear from the veggie/vegan radar for too long! People go nuts over these things.
Although I do adore the banana flavor, I may have to give it a shot with the pumpkin. It definitely sounds interesting.

  12. yeah…the chickpea cutlets are definitely amazing. I’m loving your blackbean inspired posts. I can’t wait to try the brownies…and i just got back from Cuba so the bananas and black beans are sounding pretty tasty right now!

  13. I haven’t tried them, but I don’t believe something can have “too much banana”. I’ve been on a local foods diet for a week now, and I really, really want a freakin’ banana right now. Unfortunately, they don’t grow those in Memphis. But tomorrow night, when the project officially ends, I’m eating a banana. You’re damn I am. If I had time, I’d make these yummy looking brownies tomorrow night. But that may have to wait until later…as I’m traveling to Nashville over the weekend. Thanks for the banana-licious recipe though!

  14. I hate that I haven’t tried these yet! They seem like magical brownies, and I for one have no problem with the banana/chocolate combination. Then again, I have no problems with pumpkin either… hmmmm. So many possibilities!

  15. I’m all in favor of bananas. In fact, I have at least 1 every day. But I think I went into my first bite expecting more chocolately-ness. I think using 1 banana and the rest pumpkin may make it a bit more mild and help bring out the chocolate-ability (?). Oh, but I highly suggest swirling peanut butter on top before baking, it looks and tastes incredible!

  16. Whoa, that looks seriously decadent. I think I just gained a pound from the photo.

  17. I think the major factor could be that most people tried these with cocoa powder instead of carob: I’ve only had them with carob, and it can make a big diff since it has a strong flavor of its own. at least, the brand I’m using does.

Nick, I like the fact that these are fairly healthy and low-fat compared to some other treats, that’s why I love them the way they are and won’t throw in there the peanut butter that I add everywhere else. ha!

I admire you for being a locavore, Bianca! I need to try it, and would even more enthusiastically if I lived close enough to a farmer’s market. I only have a bike as a mode of transportation and don’t feel like risking my life to go all the way across town to get the goodies.

  18. Ohhh Celine… now I’ll have to use my defrosted black beans for these brownies tonight instead of black bean burgers. Something sweet is definitely the winner if I have to choose, ha ha =p
I’ve been meaning to make this for months anyway, so this weekend I’ll finally be able to join the hype, hehe!

  21. All food is a personal preference! Most people think I am crazy for my preferences (I eat oatmeal for dessert). It is always nice to find a great base recipe and play with it to make it suit your own (or others) taste! I still need to try these, but around here there is a definite preference for boxed brownie mixes…what do they know anyway???

  22. That thing looks delicious. Are there layers or is that just one, solid brownie?

    Comment by trippingpeaches — May 31, 2008 #

  23. no layers in this, peaches, just topped a couple of them on the pic.

oatmeal for dessert, Sarena? people are just jealous they didn’t come up with the idea before!

thanks, vegan on stage. I love the fudge consistency they get too!

the bananas are out to get you, rural vegan! didn’t you know it?

  26. I’m Cuban, so naturally, black beans are part of our diet…. if I tell my mother what’s being cooked with them, she might look at me like i’m crazy. But somehow, this totally works… I’m not V or V but this is so intriguing.
