Jo Stepaniak can do no wrong.
June 29, 2008 at 8:00 pm | In blahblah, links |I almost find it disturbing how the Barbecued Buffalo Zings look like the “real” thing, so no picture. but they’re damn tasty. and I can see several other uses for the seitan base of it too: it puffs up a lot while baking, it’s fun to watch and to poke with a fork before adding the BBQ sauce to it.
if you don’t have Vegan Vittles, buy the book. or preview the recipe on Google Books to reinforce the idea that you really need to go out and buy it.
same with the Crock Cheez recipe: why did no one ever tell me how tasty the stuff is? it reminds me of the spreadable cheese I used to munch on in my non-vegan days.
I even mixed it with some processed steamed kale, to spread on bread, and it could easily be my newest favorite thing.
speaking of bread, someone on the PPK asked me to add a picture to this recipe, and I felt like being obedient today. for once. don’t get too used to it.

a few recipes I’m itching to try soon:
Tequila Carrots - because pyrotechnics are fun.
Crumbed Top Mung Bean Cake - because I was scratching my head trying to figure out what to do with the bag of mung beans I have.
Pasta Carbonara - because I have one last package of tempeh bacon to use before too long, and I mean: Pasta Carbonara, people!

I have that book but have yet to use it! I bet Kristi would not be able to eat those, but I imagine they are delicious.

You know, I’ve had that book for quite some time now and haven’t tried anything from it yet, looks like I know what to make first!

Hooray hooray hooray for Crock Cheez! That stuff is my most favorite tasty goodness spread. I was addicted for a long time, until I discovered the Chick Cheez recipe from the Uncheese Cookbook. Now my addiction has grown!

I don’t remember if I tried the chick cheez yet, I jumped on the crock one because I had tofu leftovers. next mission: try the chick recipe too. :)
note: the crock cheez recipe is in both the uncheese book and vegan vittles.

Woohoo for Crock Cheez! The smoky variation is nice too. I also highly recommend the Tempeh Tacos (my V.V. book is the1996 edition, so hopefully it’s still kickin’), especially for people who cannot stand TVP. Oh!, and the Southern-Fried Tofu & Tofu Bacon!

I just returned Vegan Vittles to the library and need to buy my own! The Pimiento Cheez was delicious as a dip for broccoli. Thanks for the heads up about recipes you enjoyed.

Thanks for the tip you obedient little lady! I really want to add a few books to my vegan cook book collection, and it’s always a bit of a gamble if you haven’t used to book before. I was thinking about Uncheese, too. Now I have to choose! Damn it!

UV’s Pasta Carbonara is on my list of things to try real soon too! I am also one of those people who doesn’t own Vegan Vittles and I keep telling myself I need to buy it. The BBQ Buffalo Zings above might have sealed the deal on me getting that book really really soon!

Thanks!

I’ve been meaning to buy that book for the crock cheese recipe. It sounds wonderful! I have another one of Jo’s books (the Vegan Sourcebook), and though it doesn’t have a ton of recipes, the ones listed are fab!

Vegan Vittles is one of my faves, but I haven’t tried EITHER of those yet! Thanks for the suggestions.

Jo Stepaniak is seriously my vegan idol and I could not survive without Vittles. Every single thing of Jo’s I’ve ever made, without exception, has rocked my world - including the puffy zings!
